Why Dependable Cash Access Remains Critical for Community Banking and Local Commerce

An ATM is easy to overlook when it works. When it does not, the distance between inconvenience and exclusion can be one dark screen.
In a rural community, an unavailable machine may mean driving to another town. For an older client, a difficult interface can create an unnecessary barrier. For a household carefully managing each dollar, a machine stocked only with larger denominations may force a withdrawal that does not fit the budget.
Dependable cash access is part of an institution’s commitment to serve the full community.
Cash Use Has Stabilized, Not Disappeared
The Federal Reserve’s 2026 Diary of Consumer Payment Choice found that cash represented 14% of consumer payments in 2025 and remained the third-most-used payment method. Four out of five consumers had used cash within the previous 30 days, and 90% expected to continue using it.
Reliance is greater among several groups community financial institutions serve closely. Adults age 55 and older averaged 10 cash payments per month. Households earning less than $25,000 used cash more often than those earning more than $150,000. Rural consumers averaged nine monthly cash payments, compared with six among urban and suburban consumers.
Cash also remains an important backup when card networks, internet connections, or other payment systems are unavailable.
How Dependable Cash Access Supports Local Businesses
Some independent restaurants and retailers are moving toward cash-only or cash-preferred models as card-processing fees place more pressure on already-narrow margins.
For an owner managing rising labor, food, supply, and operating expenses, even a small fee on every card transaction can take a meaningful share of each sale. Cash may allow the business to retain more of its revenue.
That makes nearby access important. A customer may be willing to pay cash, but not if the closest working ATM is miles away, difficult to use, or unable to provide a practical denomination. Reliable access supports both the consumer making the purchase and the local business protecting its margin.
Access Must Be Designed Around Real Life
A strong cash-access strategy begins with convenience. Well-traveled route placement or on-site machines can extend access into areas where another permanent location may not be practical.
Functionality matters just as much. Clients should be able to withdraw and deposit funds, choose useful denominations, and complete transactions through an interface that is easy to see, reach, and understand.
Hyosung’s full-function recycling technology supports cash and check deposits, denomination selection, and greater cash availability. Recycling deposited cash back into available inventory can also help keep the machine ready for the next user in between replenishment.
Accessibility includes the entire experience: lighting, physical approach, screen visibility, reach, prompts, and ease of navigation. A machine can meet a technical requirement and still fail the people it is intended to serve.
In Rural Communities, Uptime Is the Service
In a dense market, another access point may be only a few blocks away. In a rural community, downtime can remove the only convenient source of cash for miles.
First Alliance Credit Union shows how institutions can extend access beyond a fixed address. Working with NuSource, it launched a mobile branch equipped with two Hyosung ITMs, multi-carrier communications, and satellite connectivity. The unit travels throughout its 14-county service area, bringing withdrawals, deposits, payments, and financial services closer to communities without a nearby permanent location.
It is one example of how thoughtful placement and integrated technology can close a geographic gap without requiring a branch in every town.
Cash access is not outdated infrastructure. It supports financial inclusion, local commerce, and business resilience. When machines are well placed, properly equipped, serviced, secure, and reliably available, people can access and use their money wherever they live to support their entire community.
